Best Way Of Tipping The Web

Tipping is a form of gratuity, a recognition or appreciation of something like a useful content or online service, a helpful video, an exemplary music, etc. When you like a post/photo on Facebook you click the "Like' button, but in tipping you back it up by paying a micro amount(usually in cents) called a tip to the content/service provider. Sites like Flattr  cater to tipping, however, it uses PayPal for payment processing and I have a very nasty experience with PayPal . I avoid it like a plague. If you're a supporter of Buy Me Coffee type of tipping, check out at Ko-fi and Buy Me A Coffee . AddThis offers a Donate Button that supports Amazon Smile, Cash.Me, Patreon and Venmo, on top of PayPal.  Since tipping involves micropayments, I think Bitcoin is better suited for this purpose. With Bitcoin it is hassle-free to send tiny amounts and doesn't entail any deductions or fees. Plus it doesn't require any integration of third party buttons/links on your website,

Best Free Premium WordPress Theme Resources

Have a site that's based on WordPress and planning to change the theme? Or planning to put up a WordPress site? Aside from the official site , NicePage  is full of high-quality themes and all of it is free. You can browse their huge collection by type and color. For every theme, there's a demo and accompanying details to help you decide which one to use. TemplateMonster is also another good source. My sites are using Astra and also in some of my projects. It is free, lightweight and customizable. Among all the themes I've tried, it is the only one that didn't break the existing design. It works with a lot of page builders especially Elementor . Here's some free themes they recommend. ThemeForest sometimes give premium themes for free, but with no support and updates.  Materialis comes with a Companion plugin that turns it into a drag and drop front-page builder. The free version pretty features rich.

Why It's More Funny In The Philippines?

Hmm, I can't quite explain myself. There's this thought in my head but my mouth can't clearly spell it out, haha. If not for the stupid politicians, the Philippines could have already realized its potential by now. Despite the setbacks, the country is inherently beautiful. Recently, the government has been very aggressive in promoting the country as a premier tourism destination. The country is just a natural beauty, blessed with so many attractions. But its not the places alone, its the people and their unrivaled hospitality that makes the Philippines a unique destination. The video below has a more vibrant music and more dynamic presentation.

Best Free Website Monitoring Services

If you own a website, the least you want to happen is downtime, so its very important to use a website monitoring service.  UptimeRobot offers free site monitoring that sends email alerts every time your site goes offline. The free plan has a 5 minutes monitoring interval and you can add up to 50 monitors. It comes with 1 status page. Not bad for a free plan. There are four monitor types, but I'm using only the http(s) and ping. In http(s), the service regularly sends requests and decides if it is up or down depending on the statuses returned. While the ping type involves sending Ping(ICMP) requests and the status is determined "if responses are received or not". This makes ping ideal for monitoring the server and confirms if the problem just affects your site or it is caused by the server itself. I'm using it on my website and I find it very effective, it is able to detect and notify me about blips in uptime. A better option is FreshPing  by FreshWorks . The free pl

Historic Vigan

Last June 7, 2013, with friends Ting and Dadong, I embarked on a tour to historic Vigan in Ilocos Sur. From Iloilo, we boarded a Cebu Pacific plane to Manila, and from there we took a Partas bus in Pasay. The bus left the station at around 4:00 pm and its a 10-hour ride with at least 3 stopovers passing through Pampanga, Tarlac, Pangasinan, and La Union provinces. Look for accommodation in  Iloilo , Manila ,  Pasay  and Ilocos Sur . Upon arrival, we checked in at Green R Hotel. It is a cost-effective hotel located near the Partas Bus terminal and in front of the public market. The only negative thing about the room is there's just enough space for an extra bed which makes moving around cumbersome. Exhausted, everyone immediately went to sleep. Search for the best hotels in Vigan City . The very next morning, after taking breakfast early, the excitement prodded us to immediately explore the city. We haven't even taken bath or changed our clothes! The first notable place we stumb

Scenic Ilocos Norte

After our Vigan trip , Ting and I decided to proceed to Laoag, Ilocos Norte on June 9, 2013. Search for best hotels in Laoag City . We boarded a Partas Bus at around 1 pm and reached Laoag roughly 4 pm. We checked in at La Elliana Hotel. Although it is considered a budget hotel, the room is very spacious and could very well accommodate up to 6 people. We wasted no time and immediately took off and went to Museo Ilocos Norte, but we barely looked around when they closed and we have to cut short our visit. Walking distance is the Sinking Bell Tower, it used to be one of the tallest bell towers in the country. It is sinking because it was built on a sandy foundation. Nearby still is St. William’s Cathedral where Ting and I lit candles, prayed and briefly listened to the day's sermon. From St. William’s Cathedral, we took upon ourselves to look for the missing Aurora Park. We described it as "missing", because we have asked a lot of people but none of them could tell us where

What Is Bitcoin And More Questions?

Some financial experts say that Bitcoin will be the future's currency. I agree because it is what money is not. So what exactly is bitcoin? Bitcoin is technically described as the first decentralized digital currency, also known as crypto-currency. It was created by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008. The keyword here is digital and that is what differentiates it from the physical money that we are familiar with. There lots of other digital currencies but bitcoin accounts for the largest share for these type of transactions. Each bitcoin identified by the currency symbol BTC, can be divided up to 8 decimals. The smallest unit being 0.00000001 bitcoin is called a satoshi in honor of the inventor. In between a bitcoin and a satoshi there are two other smaller units. The millibitcoin which is equivalent to 0.001 bitcoin and the microbitcoin which is equal to 0.000001 bitcoin, also called a bit. Bitcoin transcends sovereign boundaries and it is available to anyone who wants to use it, anywhere i

At The Ruins, Talisay, Negros Occidental

I came across several interesting news feeds regarding The Ruins in Talisay, Negros Occidental. Search for best hotels in Talisay . Seeing pictures and reading the reviews about it got my curiosity aroused and decided that I need to see the place up close and personal. Last Dec. 7, I invited my friend Ting to come with me. We left Bacolod around 12:30 PM via Bata Libertad jeepney. Great accommodations in Bacolod City . Upon arriving at Bata roughly 20 minutes later, we boarded a tricycle going to Hacienda Santa Maria. On the way, we were treated with the vibrant landscape full of sugarcane which is the main produce of the island. Oddly, the road we took is the same road going to the International Airport, which explains the presence of traffic lights in the middle of sugarcane farms! I find it odd as there's no traffic. A few more minutes and the remains of the mansion came into view. The Ruins used to be the biggest and grandest mansion in the province. The structure sits on a tot

How I Got Scammed By BeEconomic and PayPal?

It may seem strange that a big online business like Groupon would scam an ordinary guy like me, but the following events are all true. Last May 29, 2012, I ordered a Memory Foam Pillow from BeEconomic.Com.Ph which is the Philippine arm of Groupon. Check the screenshot of the email they sent: While waiting for the item to be delivered I made another order, this time its the Air-O-Dry Indoor Convection Clothes Dryers on Jun 26, 2012. See the screenshot: Making that second order would prove to be another mistake, adding further to my existing loss. The delivery of the first order is supposed to be Jul 2, 2012 as assured by the email of their support. Take a look at the screenshot below: But as of Jul 9, I still haven't received the first item. I sent them an email about it, but they didn't even bother to reply. I sent them another email on Jul 11, but with no immediate response, I filed a dispute in PayPal for non deliverance of the item, that same day. While PayPal is investigati

Best Free Online SEO Tools

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is the process of getting traffic from the “free” and “organic” search results on search engines. Major search engines such as Google and Yahoo display web pages and other content such as videos and images based on what they consider as most relevant to users. Websites and contents are ranked, the exact mechanism involves a lot of factors unique to each engine. If you're interested to know more about SEO read Moz's article here . SEO is a giant industry in itself and encompasses a myriad of specialties. To spare you the time and effort of learning it, there are a lot of sites that offer free SEO services in a golden platter complete with an accompanying spoon and fork, haha. I've always thought of volunteering in a far and exotic place, doing my share of helping the world. However, I never had the opportunity. At least two years of relevant work experience in a professional background. Good working knowledge of at least one of these languages: English, French or Spanish. Willingness to work with people and local organizations to draw upon the synergies between expert solutions and local knowledge. Prior volunteering and/or working experience in a developing country is an asset. Processing of application is f

Best Free Linux Resources

I love open source software. Most types of these software are free, like Linux operating system. There are lots of Linux flavors around but I highly recommend Ubuntu . Compared to others, it is easy to install and the user interface is user friendly. Unlike in its early days, many of the popular Windows software have been successfully ported to Linux, so you'll more likely to "fell at home" if you decide to switch. You can use Rufus to create a USB bootable Linux installer. If you're not a fan, LifeWire has listed the top Linux distros of all time, so you can choose the one's you prefer. LifeHacker compiled essential Linux apps, but if you want to more head on to TechSupportAlert .

Best Free Data Visualization Tools

Data is more than just numbers and text, it is information that maybe of value. It takes special skills to turn meaningless data into an understandable, impactful and engaging presentation. Patterns, trends and correlations are easily recognizable using data visualization tools and services. I've been involved with quite a few web projects that require graphs, but with advancements like HTML5 and CSS3, data presentation goes beyond the standard lists, tables and graphs that people are used to. There are now tools that take visualization to a whole new level. JavaScript Frameworks Let's begin with ones that require good old coding. Personally, I use  ChartJS for my projects. Here are some self hosted JavaScript(JS) based visualization libraries:  Chiasm ,  Dygraphs  and  JavaScript InfoVis Toolkit (JIT). If you prefer Python, Bokeh  is for you. For non developers, whine not as there are online services that allows you to generate stunning visuals with less tinkering. Online Ser

Bits And Pieces Of Cebu

The gang is back! Ting, Doods and I went to the lively island of Cebu last June 5, 2014. We arrived at  Mactan Cebu International Airport at around 4:30 PM. We were booked in Elegant Circle Inn conveniently located in front of Fuente Osmena Circle. After a brief rest, we went to Robinson's Place food court for dinner which is just nearby. Having had a hearty meal, we decided to check out Ayala Center Cebu in Cebu Business Park. And oh my, the establishment is imposing both in size and prices, haha. The next day we availed of the free breakfast at the hotel and transferred to Sampaguita Suites , along Mango Avenue. We slept for a few hours and at lunchtime Doods and I ate at the resto below the hotel. In the afternoon, Ting and I went out to hunt for Amway as we intend to buy Agri-chem, personal health, and perfume products. We went along Jakosalem Avenue but not able to find it. Finally, a friendly tenant in one of the business establishments is helpful enough to tell us that t

At One With Nature In Guimaras

Last Dec. 30, 2013, just a day before the new year, Ting and I went for a little adventure at Camp Alfredo , Guimaras. Search for great accommodation in Guimaras Island . We left Iloilo at around 9 am via ferry boat at Brgy. Ortiz. Its roughly a 15 minutes ride on rough seas. Stay in Iloilo City's best hotels . Upon arrival at the Jordan pier, we jumped into a Jordan jeepney making sure the driver knows where we are going and where he will exactly drop us. It's supposed to be less than 30 minutes ride, but our jeepney made a long stop at San Miguel market. However, the long wait is rewarded by the green scenery and fresh air when we resumed. As expected, we were dropped right in front of Camp Alfredo at Ravina. The concrete signage is a welcoming sign. You can immediately feel nature inviting you to come in. We climbed down a flight of stairs towards the session hall and bar. The session hall also doubles as a resto. We asked the person in charge of some questions about the zip

Best Free Windows PC Tools

Despite the frailties and vulnerabilities of Windows, it still dominates the PC(Personal Computer) market. Windows 7 alone accounts close to 49% of the desktop operating system(OS) worldwide as of August 2017. In fact, I still use Windows 7 and have no plans of upgrading. Below are some useful Windows tools I personally use. UltraDefrag is a free defragmentation tool. Two things I like about it is, it is very fast and you can continue using your PC while it runs in the background. It works efficiently and computer speed dramatically improves. Sometimes there's just a situation where we have to run Windows 7/8 on a USB, luckily there's WinToUSB program. It allows you to install and run Windows operating system on a USB hard drive or flash drive, using an ISO image or CD/DVD drive as the source of installation. To do so you'll need the Windows image file. The free version is good enough for basic personal needs. Need more privacy? If yes, then go deep down up to the OS leve

Best Free Online Meeting Scheduler

As a Web Developer, meeting clients on the other side of the world is a problem. If the date and time is set on a different timezone from mine, it is important to know its equivalent in Philippine time. This is especially true during job interviews. Even if you're just a minute late, that's already a big turn off and there's a big chance of losing a potential client. EveryTimeZone is a free online tool for scheduling meetings on a global scale. The interface displays all the major timezones in rows and the current local time as a vertical line in dark purple color. To set a time move the green local time and it shows the time on the other timezones. Get the link to share to the other members. WorldChatClock is another visually awesome tool to use. Specify the city locations and it will show the current times. SpaceTime.AM is a paid meeting scheduler, it provides a free account for unlimited team members. Lake Sebu, A Thrilling Experience Like No Other

Me and my travel buddies: Ting, Doods, and Joy, planned for an adventurous Mindanao break away. Doods, a well-traveled dude who spent some time in Surallah, South Cotabato proposed that we include Lake Sebu in our itinerary. Search for great accommodation in Lake Sebu . At first, I was skeptical as it is a considerable distance from Davao. But after researching online, my doubts cleared and all of the sudden, Lake Sebu must be our first destination. Experience the best hotels in Davao City . We touched base at Francisco Bangoy International Airport on Feb 21, 2014. Upon disembarkation, we immediately went straight for the Bulaong Bus Terminal. We took a quick lunch at a resto just across, then we prepared ourselves for the long bus ride ahead. I can sense the urgency to reach our destination and the excitement building up. After a few minutes of waiting, our non-stop travel towards Koronadal kicked off. Along the way, we noticed that there's a lot of road construction going on, ver

Gilas Pilipinas Shines In FIBA World Cup 2014

Once in a while, you witness greatness in all its splendor. What Gilas Pilipinas exhibited in the FIBA World Cup 2014 held in Seville, Spain is nothing short of greatness. The team showcased to the whole world Philipine's own brand of basketball like never before. And in return, it earned the respect of other teams and basketball fans all over the world. In case you're wondering, what exactly is Philippine basketball? The Nike ad below perfectly captures it. The Gilas Pilipinas roster is made up of well-selected players from the PBA. They are big men Japeth Aguilar, June Mar Fajardo, Marc Pingris, Ranidel De Ocampo, and naturalized center Andray Blatche, alongside with prolific guards Gabe Norwood, Jeff Chan, Gary David, Paul Lee, Jimmy Alapag, LA Tenorio, and Jayson Castro. The squad earned the slot by winning bronze in last year's FIBA Asia championship held in Manila. This is the country's first entry since 1978 when it was the host. This is a team on a mission, they
